Manchester United 3-1 Hull:

New hero: James Wilson celebrates breaking the deadlock for Manchester United against Hull

Double trouble: Teen star Wilson hits home United's second goal to cap off a dream debut

On strike: Matty Fryatt gets the visitors back into the game with his exquisite finish

Bowing out: Nemanja Vidic goes up for a trademark header in his final appearance at Old Trafford

Back with a bang: Robin van Persie tucks home United's third goal, his first back from injury

Leaping to victory: Robin van Persie celebrates his return to scoring in style

From young to old: Player-manager Ryan Giggs comes on for Tom Lawrence

Agony: Phil Jones writhes on the floor after injuring his shoulder in a clash with Manyor Figueroa

Best foot forward: Hull's Shane Long challenges for the ball with Michael Carrick

Another hopeful: Wilson's fellow debutant Tom Lawrence (left) shoots at goal for United

Striking back: Fryatt celebrates with Hull team-mates after his effort to peg one back for the visitors

The master: Player manager Ryan Giggs in action against Ahmed Almohamady
In truth,
Fellaini should really have scored when Januzaj’s low cross reached him
but when Jakupovic saved, Wilson mopped up adroitly from 10 yards.
At that stage a hat-trick seemed possible. Giggs soon dashed those hopes by replacing the youngster with Van Persie.

In action: Adnan Januzaj jumps over a challenge from Hull midfielder David Meyler

Battle: Antonio Valencia (left) holds off the challenge of George Boyd
As it
happened, Meyler will be remembered more for an ugly late stamp on
Januzaj that may yet see the FA banish him from the Cup final. United,
for their part, rediscovered their ascendancy and by the end Giggs was
ambling around the park as though his career was just beginning.
Nobody
knows yet what the immediate future holds for English football’s
favourite Welshman. He has carried himself well over the last fortnight
but there are no guarantees.

Back in the mix: Marouane Fellaini battles Curtis Davies as United earn a confidence-boosting win

On the run: Alexander Buttner in full flight, attempting to run from Yannick Sagbo of Hull City
